By now, the third generation of LokSound decoders has been made available. All past experiences, wishes, and suggestions of our customers were brought into its development. The LokSound V3.5 is the standard for digital sound decoders. No other product can offer you more. Due to the integration of digital decoder and sound module, the LokSound decoder measures now only 31x15 mm (1.2x0.6 inch.). Its unique thermal design causes no temperature problems; heat sinks are unknown with a genuine LokSound decoder. We ship the LokSound V3.5 decoder with an eight-pin NEM652 function plug. The installation into engines with a digital interface is especially simple: Open up the loco, remove the dummy-plug, and plug in the decoder, button up the loco – done!

Operational modes

The LokSound V3.5 recognizes the DCC and Motorola® protocol. It will operate as well in DCC mode with 14, 28 or 128 speed steps; or on analogue DC layouts. It supports Lenz® LG 100, respectively Roco braking-sections as well as braking in DC blocks with reversed polarity, or the Märklin® braking section, which, from LokSound version 3.5 on, will even be recognized in DCC mode. You can either use two digit (0-127), or four digit (1-9999) addresses, or assign a consist address. The Motorola® protocol makes it possible to run theLokSound decoder with Märklin® stations 6020,6021, delta, mobile station®, and central station®. Hereby the decoders handle addresses 01-80, stop correctly on the Märklin® braking section, and can be used without problems on all analog AC layouts. During operation, the LokSound decoder converses automatically between all four control modes: AC, Motorola; DC, DCC. That’s important, in case you run parts of your layout (e.g. fiddle yard) in analog mode.

Motor management

All customary DC or coreless motors, regardless whether from Roco®, Fleischmann®, Brawa®, Mehano®, Bemo®, Märklin®, Faulhaber® or Maxon® can be hooked up to the powerful, 1.1 A steady-load last stage of the LokSound V3.5 decoder. All-current motors can be continued to use if you replace the field winding with a HAMO magnet. The back EMF with 32 kHz High frequency regulation takes care of a silky smooth, absolutely quiet motor operation and lets your engines crawl super slowly on the layout. A 10-bit A/D-converter makes this possible. Due to Dynamic Drive Control (DCC) you can limit the influence of the load control, and operate really smoothly around the depot and over turnouts, while on the main, when going uphill, the engine slows prototypically down.

Sound

The LokSound V3.5 decoder stores up to 138 seconds of sound data in its 8 MBit flash chip. This is transferred to the last stage audio amplifier via four polyphonic sound channels. The ability of LokSound V3.5 to reproduce sound, such as load dependant strain (de-selectable), or Doppler Effect, brings you closer to reality again. The channel volume can be adjusted separately.

Analog operation

As of LokSound V3.5 load control also functions in analog mode, where you can pre-determine startingand top speed. Also the sound-sequences are there: LokSound V3.5 offers model railroaders even without a digital system the chance to enjoy LokSound.

Functions

The LokSound V3.5 offers four function outputs with 250 mA continuous-current each that can be allocated individually to a function. Besides beacon, strobe and alternate flashing, there is firebox flicker, as well as Mars light or Gyra light for US models. All function outputs are individually dimmable in 15 steps. Each function output can be allocated to any function key between F0 and F15 (mapping), and complies therefore with the latest NMRA DCC directives. Furthermore, the combination of sound-and function sequences makes it possible to simulate realistic function events, such as firebox flicker when shovelling coal.

Programming

The LokSound decoder supports all DCC-programming modes. All adjustments are done electronically. This is even true when working with Märklin® control units 6020, 6021, mobile station® and central station®. For these units, the LokSound decoder employs a proven, easily acquired programming procedure. All programmed modifications during Motorola® operation are valid with DCC and vice verse. Programming configuration variables (CV’s) is especially comfortable for owners of our ECoS Command Station: All variations are displayed in plain language on the large screen and can easily be altered – even during operation on the layout.

Safeguard

All function outputs and the motor connection are protected against overload and short-circuit. We want you to enjoy your LokSound decoder as long as possible.

Built-in future

LokSound decoders are firmware-updatable. This means, the internal decoder software can be replaced by new versions, if need be. For this, you only need an ESU LokProgrammer and a PC. You will appreciate the value of this investment, when you realize that any owner of a V3.0 LokSound decoder can, through an update, turn it into a V3.5 LokSound decoder: You can download the software from our homepage – free of charge.

Variety of sound

ESU, as market and technology leader, takes your demands for sound realism very seriously. That’s why we offer, for the LokSound V3.5 alone, over 400 (!) sound variants. When you purchase a sound module of a certain prototype from us, you can be sure the sound comes from that loco. Guaranteed! You can count on it. See the next pages for an exact summary of all available sounds.

We are proud to present to you the brand-new LokSound Select decoder. The LokSound Select decoder was designed with all our past experience, while considering many suggestions of ESU users.
The LokSound Select is a versatile DCC & DC “Dual Mode” decoder integrating a full-featured, 8 channel sound system, six lighting outputs and a 1.1A motor controller. While the LokSound Select only measures 1.41” x 0.61” (36mm x 15.5mm), due to its unique thermal design, it does (like all genuine LokSound decoders) not need any heat sinks.
We ship the LokSound Select with a removable, 9 pin standard harness with 7.5” of length. This allows flexible installation in older brass and pre DCC-ready models. An optional 8 pin NMRA connector can be alternatively wired to the decoder’s JST connector to make it a “plug & play” decoder. For LokSound Select, we offer a comprehensive range of new high-power speakers, rated 4 Ohms.

Operational modes

The LokSound Select can be used on conventional “analog” layouts and controlled with a DC power pack, but to benefit from all its features, we highly recommend DCC operation.
The LokSound Select follows all NMRA DCC standards and recommended practices. It can be used with 14, 28 or 128 speed steps, supports two digit (7 bit addresses) as well as “4-digit” addressing. Up to 29 function keys are supported. The LokSound Select can change between DC and DCC operation at any time “on the fly”.
Of course, the LokSound Select supports all DCC-programming modes including Programming on the Main Track (“POM”). Because of its unique low-power design, the LokSound Select can be programmed on the programming track of all popular DCC systems. No programming track boosters or other circuitry will be needed.
By the use of our LokSound Programmer, programming can be even more comfortable by using your computer to adjust the many CVs and settings.

Sound

The LokSound Select comes with a 32 MBit memory chip. The sounds stored therein are our own recordings which were made by using the latest recording equipment and have been digitally re-mastered for the best audio possible. The sounds are transferred to a class “D” audio amplifier via eight polyphonic sound channels. LokSound Select decoders offer the following unique features:

  • Multiple whistle and horns: Each LokSound Select offers many whistle & horns. By just changing one CV, you can select your favorite one. This allows an easier adjustment to your model.
  • Playable whistle: The LokSound Select supports a very fast responding whistle function. By just pressing your throttle‘s button, you can really blow the whistle like the real engineer.
  • 8 channel sound: The LokSound Select can playback up to 8 sounds at the same time. This will result in the most realistic experience available today.
  • Synchronized brake squeal: The LokSound Select will synchronize the brake squeal sound with the real movement of the locomotive. No longer will stopped trains have the brake sound still on!
  • Manual notching: The diesel speed steps can be either manually controlled by function keys or automatically based on the speed.
  • Individual volume control: The volume of all sound effects can be adjusted individually.

Steam decoders can produce over 20 sound effects, including the bell, air pump, exhaust chuff, coupler, steam release, cylinder cocks, brake release, side rod clank, blower, injector, Fireman Fred and many more. Synchronizing the steam chuff rate by using two CVs only virtually eliminates the need for a cam, but can of course be connected.

Diesel decoders can produce over 20 sound effects, including the engine start-up and shutdown, prime mover sounds through all eight notches, bell, air horn, air compressor, dynamic brakes, fans, brake squeals, coupling and uncoupling, detector sounds, rail clank and many more.

Customize your sounds

Unlike other manufacturers, LokSound Select offers you two options to customize your engine. The most simple is by using one (!) CV. You can select the prime mover sound, the desired whistle or horn and the bell. Each LokSound Select offers various options on that.
However, if you are still unsatisfied with the result, you may at any time use the famous LokSound Programmer to download new sounds into the LokSound Select. We offer numerous “ready-made” sound packages for easy downloading.

Superior motor control

ESU offers load compensation (using B-EMF) since 1999. While other manufacturers seem only to focus on the sound options, the LokSound Select offers the 5th generation of motor control resulting in a smooth and precise locomotive operation. We at ESU believe that good motor control is mandatory for model trains: Even the best sound is worthless if the locomotive running is not smooth!
Regardless if you are using coreless or conventional DC motors, the LokSound Select’s unique auto-detection function can measure the characteristics and adjust the internal settings. There is no need to fiddle around with many CVs to adjust to the engine. Due to Dynamic Drive Control (DDC) you can limit the influence of the load control and operate really smoothly around the depot and over turnouts, while on the main, when going uphill the engine prototypically slows down.

Shining lighting effects

Each LokSound Select include 6 (!) outputs with 0.25A current each that can be allocated individually to a light effect, which simulates the light patterns of many popular warning beacons. Besides D312 Rotary beacon, strobe and alternate flashing, there is a firebox flicker, smart flicker, Mars light, Gyralight, Ditch lights (two types), Oscillating Headlights, Stratolight and many more.
The Rule 17 dimmable headlight can be either controlled automatically or by function button. A LED brightness correction feature now also allows using LEDs for lighting effects. This is an important feature since LEDs do behave different than bulbs.

Safeguard

All function outputs and the motor connection are protected against overload and short-circuit. We want you to enjoy your LokSound decoder as long as possible.

Built-in future

LokSound Select decoders are firmware-updatable. This means, the internal decoder software can be replaced by new versions, if necessary. For this, you only need an ESU LokSound Programmer and a PC.

"The standard of technology excellence"

The LokPilot decoders are the perfect choice for the advanced model railroader. Versatility and reliability are qualities you would expect from ESU. No matter if you operate it using NMRA/DCC or conventional DC, the decoder will automatically detect the operation mode. LokSound mfx really brings your locos to life

MSRP $159

Model railroaders who put emphasis on realistic operation can’t pass up the new LokSound mfx. By it’s sound functions life is finally brought to your model railroad. Besides the convincing properties of the LokPilot mfx, the LokSound mfx can reproduce the loco-typical sounds. It features a flash memory cip with a recording capacity of up to 65 seconds: more than enough to reproduce not only the actual running noise, but also those special sounds generated by air or water pumps, compressors, gear switching, brake squealing and other complex sounds. Integrated into our decoders are operational events, such as random coal shovelling, (even synchronized with a mini lamp in the firebox), station announcements, the squealing of a door, or the conductors whistle ("all aboard!"). Of course you can always activate whistles, horns, bells, or compressors with function keys.
Since LokSound mfx possesses 4 (!) independent sound channels, you can always play combined multiple sounds. In addition to the steady steam
chuff activate the bell before a crossing and sound the whistle in time. There is a selection of LokSound mfx decoder for 2-,3-, and 4-cylinder steam engines, as well as for various diesel engines (diesel hydraulic or diesel electric) and electro locos. The latter with separate traction motor-and blower control. To polish it off, there is load dependent sound adjustment: The motor rpm decreases when the programmed speed is reached, and the volume increases under load or when accelerating. ESU offers LokSound mfx in many different variations for the prototype sound you desire. All parameters are factory preadjusted, so that your mfx-center’s display not only shows the pertinent loco class, but also the correct symbols for the function keys.

"Digital command control with original sound"

All LokSound decoders combine a high quality digital decoder and a digital sound module on one circuit board. You can operate your locomotives digitally and at the same time replay the original sound as well as special sound effects such as horn or whistle. The sound is adjusted to the particular running mode at any point in time: when the loco starts moving, you hear the appropriate sounds (diesel engine revving up, steam chuffs with increasing frequency) and when it stops, you hear the engine slow down and also braking sounds.
LokSound decoders set the trend in terms of technology and sound quality. Besides the features you would expect from a state-of-the-art decoder, they offer many more:

  • Autodetection of digital or analog operation

  • Suitable for any Digital Command Control (DCC) system, including: Digitrax®, NCE, MRC® DCC, Atlas® commander®, Bachmann® E-Z command®, Lenz® digital plus®, Zimo®, LGB® MTS®, ROCO®, Fleischmann® Twin-Center®
  • Suitable for AC-, DC- and coreless motors
  • Super silent running due to pulse frequency of 32 KHz Perfect load compensation for optimal running especially on uphill or downhill gradients; exceptional slow running characteristics
  • Load control can be adapted to any motor by means of 3 CVs Dynamic Drive Control (DDC) - Back EMF active at low speeds for smooth slow running operation with reduced influence at high speeds
  • Back EMF also active in conventional AC or DC mode - User has full control of motor and acceleration Acceleration and deceleration can be switched with function button
  • Switcher mode (half speed) can be activated with function button Up to 4 auxiliary function outputs suitable for smoke units, interior lighting, automatic couplers, for raising and lowering pantographs, ditch lights or lighting the fire box

Multiple allocations are possible allowing for the combination of sound and functions e.g. the sound of shoveling coal and light flickering in the firebox Integrated Function Keys F13-F20 - latest NMRA DCC standards
  • Short circuit protection for motor and function outputs
Realistic sounds - as in the real world - can easily be reproduced with the sound module, because the original sounds are memorized digitally on a chip. The sound module offers a new and fascinating model world full of sound.
The 4-Channel feature allows you to add 3 sound effects simultaneously to the running sound, your engine will sound even more realistic.
  • Really hear your engine work - exhaust chuffs synchronized to the wheel and to the load - lower motor revolutions for diesel engines once the set speed has been reached - separate running sound and ventilator sounds for electric locomotives. Load Dependent Sound - may be turned off
  • The sound speed is synchronized with the speed steps or with an external sensor. This is suitable for use with mechanical sensors, reed switches or Hall sensors. Your model railway becomes more authentic than ever with the large 8 MBit memory allowing for complex sound effects, such as the typical noise of a stationary steam engine, the announcements by the dispatcher, the whistle of the train guard and many more. You can activate up to 15 different sounds with the function buttons.
  • Adjustable sound volume - Control the volume for the prime mover, horn or whistle and bell individually; accomplished by the use a function key on the command station throttle or adjust the CVs. With the Helper Function the user can select whether the engine runs standalone, head-of-consist, mid-of-consist, or end-of-consist. Certain functions can be enabled/disabled, for instance the horn and bell is active on the first engine only, whereas the prime mover sound is on for all engines.
  • Consist mode CVs - Influence the behavior of the function keys with the added CVs 21 and 22. Analog Sound - Even on conventional DC layouts you will hear all prime mover sounds synchronized to the operation condition.

LokSound V3.5

With LokSound you can run your engines smoothly due to load compensation while activating many functions and enjoying the original sounds as if it was the prototype. Of course you may also blow the horn or the steam whistle, turn on pumps or let the brakes squeel when stopping the engine. The combination of decoder and sound module in one unit allows for precise adaptation of sounds to the running mode. With 4 sound channels there are no limits to creating realistic sound effects.
